Quit Smoking!!!
Hi, precious friends!
I am a 55-year-old, born-again Christian woman, who began smoking when I was 18 years old (1971). I continued to smoke nonstop ever since that time, until I was blessed enough for the Lord to allow me to develop acute bronchitis at the end of May 2006! I say blessed enough, because it could have been emphysema, a heart attack, a stroke, or any number of incurable, debilitating diseases. But because of His lovingkindness, He gave me another chance... a chance to finally listen to the "hints" He'd been giving me for a couple of months before then (shortness of breath, numbing in my hands, and the feeling of having an elephant stepping on my chest). Read "My original prayer request" below for the full story! All praise be to El Shaddai! If you've never begun smoking, don't START! And don't think that you can quit any time you want... you can't! It grabs hold of you so fast, you won't even know it happened! If you smoke now, QUIT!!! Use the nicotine patches, or whatever is necessary to ensure you stay quit, but QUIT!!! If you need to talk to someone who's been there, done that, please write me at the email address at the bottom of this page. I will be MORE than happy to help in any way I can! BTW, each January 1st, I ask the Lord what I can do special for Him that year. This year, He didn't give me an answer until last week... this is what He'd like me to do for Him in 2006... quit smoking (which I have) and try to be an encouragement to others who are trying to break this all-consuming habit!
Love to you in Him!
Peggy

COPD Self-Test <- NEW!!!
The COPD self-test in abstract No. 1124 by Kathleen S. Wolford would be called a breathing self-test, include about 10 questions and have a lead-in that reads something like: "Do you ever wonder if your breathing is normal? If you answer yes to three or more of these questions, you should call your doctor, to discuss your answers. Many things can be done today to assist people with breathing issues, and beginning treatment as early as possible is important." Here are possible questions, all from members of EFFORTS...

MEDICAL ASPECTS & FINDINGS:
COPD Raises Risk of Hardened Arteries
New research reveals patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease have more arterial stiffness than those without COPD, which could help explain why these patients are at increased risk for heart disease.
Posted 6/20/07The Effects of Smoking on the Heart
Includes info about Peripheral vascular disease (PVD): Smokers have a 16 times greater risk of developing peripheral vascular disease (blocked blood vessels in the legs or feet) than people who have never smoked. Smokers who ignore the warning of early symptoms and continue to smoke are more likely to develop gangrene of a leg. Cigarette smoking combines with other factors to multiply the risks of atherosclerosis. Patients who continue to smoke after surgery for PVD are more likely to relapse, leading to amputation, and are more likely to die earlier.

The gum can cost double the amount of cigarettes and there's the lingering misconception that the gum is as dangerous as smoking itself. "Nobody has ever died of nicotine gum, nobody," Dr. Wineburg says.

Most people who quit smoking worry about gaining weight. It seems to go with the territory. While a small gain is normal, excessive weight gain when you quit smoking can create new health problems and erode your determination to stay off cigarettes.

When Smokers Quit - The Health Benefits Over Time
This is AWESOME how quickly the Lord allows the regeneration of our lungs, heart, sinuses, etc., back to the way He originally planned for them to look! CHECK THIS OUT!!!QUIT SMOKING AIDS:
Chantix (quit smoking aid). Below are comments from my precious sister-in-Yahshua, Judy Hamilton, who recently quit smoking using Chantix. You GO, GF!!!
Chantix, by Pfizer, is a very new aid for smoking cessation. My daughter's doctor (in Wisconsin) had prescribed it for her, and since I had promised to quit with her, I talked to my doctor about it. He had never heard of it, but looked into it and wrote the precription. It takes about a week to build up in your system, and you continue to smoke during that time, but you cut back without even thinking about it. You do have to set a date to stop, therefore making the committment. Nothing will work if you're not ready to quit. Chantix blocks the satisfaction derived from smoking, and eases the urge to smoke. It really is terrific! The only side effect I've experienced is nausea (morning sickness <grins>) which subsides after I eat a little breakfast.Cigarrest
The Chewable Tablets help the smoker overcome the overwhelming urge to smoke whenever the urge to do so strikes the individual. Then there is The Gum that also takes away the cravings and relieves the oral fixation associated with smoking.
Commit Lozenges
More habit forming than cigarette smoking!!! It took me 2 weeks of withdrawals to get the nicotine out of my system!!! Each tablet is 4 MG (most cigarettes are .5 MG each), and they tell you to start off taking at LEAST 9 per day = 36 MG/day... almost FOUR packs a day!!! DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT if you don't absolutely have to!!! If you do, use it for no longer than a week or two... just enough to lose your withdrawal pains! Truthfully, I couldn't have quit without them, but I sure got hooked on them FAST!Freedent Chewing Gum
Freedent gum won't stick to most dental work. It offers a non-stick chewing gum option in three great-tasting flavors: Peppermint, Spearmint, and Winterfresh. Experience the freedom of chewing gum without the stick.NJoy Cigarettes
"NJOY Cigarettes” are a revolutionary new smoking alternative. They look, feel and taste like actual cigarettes but rather than burning tobacco you inhale a warm and soothing nicotine based water vapor that is free from harmful additives, carcinogens and tar. Njoy cigarettes replicate the smoking experience while giving you your nicotine fix and satisfying your cravings. But what makes Njoy Cigarettes even better than the real thing is the freedom to smoke them anywhere, anytime and without any nasty second hand smoke.

Cigarette anyone? - True stories from people with emphysema. Excerpt from a man with COPD:
Sit down somewhere and relax a little and when you feel comfortable, take your right or left hand and with your thumb and forefinger, hold your nose shut. While holding your nose shut, cover your mouth tightly with the rest of your hand so you can just barely breathe through your fingers. Now, walk for about 40 steps and turn around and come back while still breathing through your hand. Now, do you see how hard it is to breathe? Especially when you try to walk around? That is what Emphysema is and that is what smoking can do to you. Not for awhile, but when you are older and it is too late to do anything about it.EFFORTS COPD Patient Stories
